Galvanized or painted: picking a stair finish.
A steel stair that lives outdoors in Ontario sees freeze-thaw cycling, road salt, and standing water for six months a year. The finish decides whether it's still structurally sound in twenty years or whether it's a repaint line item every seven. Here's how the four options actually compare.
Short answer: outdoors, hot-dip galvanize. Zinc protects sacrificially — a scratch doesn't start a corrosion cell the way a scratch in paint does — and it's maintenance-free for decades. Indoors and dry, paint is cheaper and adequate. When an architect wants a colour outdoors, use a duplex system: galvanize first, then paint over it.

Why galvanizing wins outdoors
The difference isn't thickness — it's chemistry. Paint is a barrier: it works as long as it's continuous, and the moment it's breached at a sharp edge, a weld toe, or a bolt hole, moisture reaches steel and corrosion creeps under the film. Hot-dip galvanizing forms metallurgically bonded zinc-iron layers that protect sacrificially — zinc corrodes preferentially, so bare steel at a scratch stays protected by the zinc around it.
That property is exactly what an outdoor stair needs, because the places a stair gets damaged are the places paint fails first: nosing edges scraped by boots, the underside of treads hit by ice chipping, and every bolted connection. Hot-dip galvanizing to the standard industrial coating thickness also coats the inside of hollow sections and the mating faces of connections — areas a spray gun never reaches.
Where each finish actually fails
- Paint outdoors: rust bleed at connections within a few winters, then undercutting. Repainting in place means access equipment, containment, and often a shutdown — which is why the second repaint usually costs more than galvanizing would have.
- Galvanizing: fails only where the coating is destroyed after the fact. Field welding, torch cutting, or drilling on site burns off the zinc, and those spots must be repaired with a zinc-rich coating. This is why we detail galvanized stairs to be fully bolted at site with no field welding.
- Powder coat: excellent finish quality, but it's still a barrier coating and it chips. Good for architectural interior stairs, not for a plant's exterior egress tower.
- Duplex: fails when the painter treats galvanized steel like bare steel. Zinc needs the right surface prep and a compatible primer or the topcoat peels in sheets.
Two things that catch people out in fabrication
Galvanizing isn't a coating you apply — it's a bath you dip the steel into, and that has design consequences:

The vent-hole one is worth flagging with anyone quoting you a galvanized stair with HSS posts. Sealed hollow sections can't go in a kettle safely — trapped moisture flashes to steam. They need holes, and where those holes go is a detailing decision, not something to sort out at the galvanizer's door. It also affects lead time, since the steel makes a round trip before it ships.
When paint is the right call
Plenty of stairs don't need zinc. An interior mezzanine access stair in a dry, heated warehouse will outlive the building on a shop primer and a urethane topcoat, and paint lets you match a colour scheme or use safety yellow on guards without a second process. The honest rule: if the stair never sees water, condensation, or wash-down chemicals, paint it and put the savings into the structure.
The two interior exceptions worth watching are cold storage — where condensation on cycling surfaces behaves like an outdoor exposure — and food-grade wash-down areas, where the sanitation chemistry drives the material choice. We covered the latter in food-grade mezzanines.
