What stair work actually costs in Ontario.
Honest typical ranges by configuration — for buyers who want a sense of the number before booking a site measure. Every fixed-price quote we send is project-specific and includes the stamped drawing; what's below is just an order-of-magnitude reference.
Order of magnitude, not a price list.
The ranges below are the typical bands we see on Ontario projects in 2026. They include design, fabrication, finish, and install — they do not include unusual site conditions (overnight install, restricted-access work, hot-work permit fees, third-party inspections). If your project sits outside the typical envelope for the configuration, we'll say so in the first 10 minutes of a phone call.
Typical ranges by configuration
Ranges shown are 2026 typical bands for Ontario projects, including design, fabrication, finish, and install. Excludes unusual site conditions (overnight install, restricted-access work, third-party inspections). Project-specific quotes are always exact.
What drives the number
- Configuration — straight-run is cheapest; switchback adds material and labour; exterior egress towers are most because of anchor design and galv.
- Finish — shop primer is the floor. Hot-dip galv adds 10 – 25%. Powder-coat over galv adds another 10 – 20%. Two-coat industrial paint sits between.
- Width — egress width is calculated from occupant load. A 1100 mm stair costs more than a 900 mm stair across the same rise.
- Site access — a stair that fits through doorways in pre-fab pieces installs cheaply. One that needs to be lifted by crane through a roof opening doesn't.
- Code envelope — residential stairs are simpler than industrial egress; the same physical project can have different costs depending on which path it falls under.
- Engineering complexity — wall composition unknown? Existing structure undocumented? Anchor design takes more engineering hours; that goes into the quote.
What's included in our quotes
- Stamped structural drawings produced by our Ontario P.Eng.
- Material take-off and shop fabrication
- Finish (whichever specified — shop primer, galv, powder-coat, or stack)
- Delivery to site
- Install by our own crew (we do not subcontract install)
- Sign-off walk with the facility manager / GC
- As-built drawings + load plate at handoff
What's not included unless specified
- Permit fees (drawings are stamped; permit submission is the GC's scope unless we agree otherwise)
- Concrete pads or footing work for free-standing stairs
- Demolition of existing stairs
- Hot-work permit / fire-watch on sites that require it
- Third-party inspection fees
- Overnight or weekend install premium
What we won't quote without a site measure
We don't send a fixed-price quote for any stair attached to existing structure (fire escape, retrofit egress, roof access) without a pre-attachment look at the wall — masonry coursing, concrete cover, or steel framing. The same applies to any stair where the existing column lines, floor flatness, or overhead obstructions could move the design. A 30-minute site walk is the difference between a quote that holds and an estimate that drifts at install.
