Pricing & quotes
How much does a mezzanine cost in Ontario?
Most industrial mezzanines we ship in 2026 land between $50 – $120 CAD per square foot installed, depending on load class, deck choice, finish, and access stair scope. Detailed breakdown by configuration is in the mezzanine cost guide.
How much does a steel stair cost?
Cost varies with rise, run, finish, and code envelope. A straight-run mezzanine access stair runs $4,000 – $8,000; an OBC-compliant switchback egress stair runs $12,000 – $30,000+; a fire-escape retrofit runs $25,000 – $60,000+. See the stair cost guide.
Do you provide free quotes?
Yes. A typical-range conversation over the phone is free. A fixed-price quote requires a site measure (~30 minutes on-site) which is also free; we recover the time in fabrication efficiency, not in upfront fees.
What's included in the quote?
Stamped structural drawings, fabrication, finish per spec, decking, primary access stair, 42" guards, delivery, and install by our own crew. Excludes concrete pour (when B-deck + concrete), permit fees, and unusual-condition install premiums. See the cost guides for full inclusions / exclusions.
Engineering & code
Are stamped drawings included?
Yes — every fixed-price quote includes stamped structural drawings produced by our in-house Ontario P.Eng. We don't separate engineering as a line item.
Who stamps the drawings?
Two licensed Professional Engineers registered with PEO work in-house on Span Line projects. Names and licence numbers are on the team page; verify any P.Eng. licence at the PEO public licence lookup.
Do I need a building permit for a mezzanine?
Almost always yes. The narrow exceptions are detailed in the mezzanine permits in Ontario article. Plan on 6 – 12 weeks for permit issue at most municipal building departments.
What live load do I need for pallet storage?
Most pallet storage runs 125 – 250 psf live load. Heavier dense-pallet operations can run 300 – 500+ psf. Detail on the math is in the load ratings guide.
What's OBC §3.4?
OBC 2024 Part 3, Section 4 — "Means of Egress." It governs exit stairs, egress paths, and occupant-load width calculations. The full OBC stair code guide walks through the relevant clauses.
Process & timeline
How long from quote to install?
Typical: 6 – 8 weeks from sign-off, plus 1 – 2 weeks for site measure to quote. Permit time at the building department is typically 4 – 8 additional weeks (in parallel where possible). Detail in the mezzanine lead times article.
Can you install during a shutdown window?
Yes — most of our installs are shutdown-coordinated. We plan the install schedule to a specific start and end window, with a pre-install verification walk the day before. See the shutdown-install article for the discipline.
Do you install or subcontract?
In-house. The install crew works for Span Line; we don't subcontract erection. Same crew on every project.
Where do you work?
Toronto, the GTA, and southern Ontario. We deliver Canada-wide on qualifying scopes; install is Ontario-based.
What size projects do you handle?
Smallest typical project: a single mezzanine access stair (~$5,000). Largest: 25,000+ sqft multi-tier mezzanines or major fire-escape retrofits. We don't typically take on residential bath-renovation railing projects, but custom residential steel stairs are in scope.
Certifications & standards
Are you CWB W47.1 certified?
Yes. Division-specific certification details and our certification number are available on request and verifiable at cwbgroup.org.
What standards do you build to?
Ontario Building Code 2024, NBCC 2020 §4.1.5 for loads, CSA S16-19 for steel design, CSA W59 for welding, CSA G164 for galvanizing. Full list with verification links on the certifications page.
Can you provide a Certificate of Insurance?
Yes. Commercial General Liability and Professional Liability (Errors & Omissions); COI with named-insured / named-additional-insured endorsements provided per project on request.
Do you provide WSIB clearance?
Yes — current WSIB clearance is provided per project as part of standard pre-engagement documentation.
Design choices
Bar-grate or B-deck for my mezzanine?
Storage mezzanines: B-deck + concrete (smooth, supports rolling loads). Pick mezzanines: bar-grate (sprinkler reach to grade). Equipment platforms: depends on point load (plate or B-deck). Detail in mezzanine decking options.
Galvanized or powder-coat for an outdoor stair?
Hot-dip galvanized first — that's the corrosion barrier. Powder-coat goes over galv if architectural review wants colour. Powder-coat alone is not weather-grade for an Ontario exterior egress stair.
Do you do rack-supported platforms?
Generally no — structural philosophy reasons explained in mezzanine vs rack-supported platform. We focus on engineered structural mezzanines.
Can I move my mezzanine later?
For modular bolt-together kits, yes. For fully welded, no. See modular mezzanines.
