Work platforms. Picking, pack-out, supervisor stations, process work.
Where a storage mezzanine is mostly about cubic, a work platform is mostly about people. Egress capacity, deck size relative to occupant count, and access ergonomics all change. Designed to the actual workflow, not the catalogue.
Use cases
The workflow drives the deck.
"Work platform" covers a wide range of mezzanine use cases — pick mezzanines for e-commerce fulfillment, pack-out stations on a manufacturing line, supervisor platforms over a production floor, QA / inspection decks, mezzanine-mounted control rooms. They share a common detail: people on the deck during normal operation, which changes the structural and code envelope from a pure storage mezzanine.
Common applications
- Picking decks — for e-commerce fulfillment; typically bar-grate deck for sprinkler coverage to grade, with order-conveyor takeaway.
- Pack-out stations — work platforms with conveyor inputs; conveyor support often integrated.
- Supervisor / line platforms — sight-line platforms over a production line; smaller footprint, lower occupant count.
- QA / inspection decks — table-mounted, often with pass-through openings to pull product from below.
- Process / control platforms — for batch operators or process equipment monitoring.
Detail decisions
- Deck choice — bar-grate is the default for picking (sprinkler coverage), B-deck + concrete for pack-out (conveyor mounts), plate for heavy point loads.
- Egress count — calculated from occupant load. Most pick mezzanines under ~60 people get away with one stair plus a pallet drop; larger decks need two stairs.
- Pallet drop — counter-balanced gate at a designated drop location, with floor-edge guard. Doubles as secondary egress in many cases.
- Conveyor pass-throughs — engineered openings for conveyor takeaway; guards and toe-plates wrap around the opening.
- Access stair sizing — minimum 1100 mm wide for occupant-load egress; see mezzanine access stairs.
