Capacity is deck area × the live-load rating (psf). Framing steel is estimated at roughly 7–22 lb/sqft of deck depending on the load class — heavier loads and longer spans mean more steel. Both are planning figures; the governing numbers come from a stamped design that accounts for concentrated loads, span, slab capacity, and deck type. How do you calculate a mezzanine's load capacity?
Total uniform live-load capacity is the deck area multiplied by the live-load rating — a 2,000 sqft deck rated at 250 psf carries 2,000 × 250 = 500,000 lb (250 tons) of uniform live load. That's the headline number; the real design also accounts for concentrated loads, deck dead load, span, and how the load is distributed, which is why a stamped design is the number that governs.
What live-load rating (psf) does my mezzanine need?
It depends on use: light storage and general access often sit around 125 psf, heavier hand-stacked or light-pallet storage around 175–250 psf, and dense pallet or equipment storage 250–500 psf or more. How much does the steel weigh / how many tons is my mezzanine?
As a rough planning estimate, mezzanine framing steel runs roughly 7–22 lb per square foot of deck depending on the load class and span — higher loads and longer spans mean heavier steel. The calculator gives a range on that basis. It excludes the deck surface itself (bar-grate or composite concrete deck is separate) and is not a substitute for a fabrication take-off.
