Mezzanine floor loadings: picking a PSF rating.

"What load rating do I need?" is the question that decides most of a mezzanine's cost, and it's usually answered with a number someone heard once. Here's what the common ratings are actually used for, what a rating covers, and the loads that get left off the list.

Short answer: most industrial mezzanines land at 100 psf (4.8 kPa) for general storage or 125 psf (6.0 kPa) for heavier palletized storage. Maintenance platforms sit at 60–75 psf, mezzanine offices around 50–60 psf, and machine platforms run 150–250 psf+. The rating is uniformly distributed live load — dead load and concentrated point loads are checked on top of it.

Typical ratings by use

These are the figures that come up on real Ontario projects. Use them to orient a budget conversation, not as a substitute for the engineered number:

Note the bottom two rows. Once a machine or a lift truck is involved, a uniform psf number stops being the controlling design case — a 6,000 lb machine on four feet and a counterbalance forklift driving onto the deck are point-load problems, and a platform rated to a high psf can still fail locally under either.

What a rating covers — and what it doesn't

A "125 psf mezzanine" means the framing is designed for 125 pounds per square foot of uniformly distributed live load across the tributary area, in addition to dead load. What it does not tell you:

  • Concentrated load capacity. A narrow cart wheel or a rack base plate concentrates weight into a few square inches. Decks and framing get a separate concentrated-load check.
  • Deflection. Strength is rarely what governs a floor people walk on — stiffness is. A deck can be strong enough and still feel unacceptably bouncy, so beams are usually sized by a deflection limit rather than by stress.
  • Where the load can go. Loading the full rating in one bay is not the same as spreading it across the platform. If you plan a dense zone, say so; it changes the framing plan.

The dead load nobody counts

Live load gets all the attention because it's the number on the quote. Dead load is what the structure carries before you put anything on it, and the decking choice swings it dramatically:

  • Bar grate~7 – 12 psf
  • Steel plate / checker plate~10 – 25 psf
  • Resin board on B-deck~12 – 20 psf
  • B-deck + concrete topping~35 – 45 psf
  • Fixed partitions / officesadd per layout
  • Mechanical & conveyor aboveadd per equipment

A composite deck-and-concrete floor is worth roughly a third of a 125 psf live load before a single pallet lands on it. That's the trade: concrete gives you a hard-wearing, quiet, forklift-friendly surface, and you pay for it in framing. Bar grate is nearly free structurally but drops debris and light through. The decking decision and the load rating have to be made together, which is why we ask about both in the same conversation.

The load path continues below the columns

The most common budget surprise on a mezzanine retrofit isn't the steel — it's the slab. Every square foot of platform load funnels down to a handful of column base plates, and an existing warehouse slab was designed for distributed floor loading and forklift traffic, not for concentrated column reactions. Depending on the reaction, the slab thickness, and the subgrade, the answer ranges from a larger base plate to a cut-and-pour footing at each column.

How to choose a rating you won't outgrow

Two practical rules from projects that came back for a second phase:

Buy the next rating up if the use might change. At design stage, the cost delta from 100 to 125 psf is modest — heavier beams within the same framing plan. After the fact, upgrading means adding steel around installed racking, conveyor, and services, at multiples of the original cost. A platform bought for "light storage" that becomes palletized storage two years later is the single most common regret.

Rate zones separately where it's worth it. On a large platform there's no rule that says the whole deck needs the highest number. A heavy-storage bay at 150 psf with the balance at 100 psf costs less than 150 psf everywhere — provided the zones are marked and the load posting is honoured on site. How do I calculate the load capacity I need?
Start with what goes on the deck: for pallet storage, the heaviest pallet weight divided by its footprint, adjusted for aisle space; for equipment, the operating weight (including fluids) and its bearing points; for people and light work, the code minimum for the occupancy usually governs. Then add the dead load of the deck itself and any fixed equipment. What loads do people forget on a mezzanine?
Four, consistently: the dead weight of the decking itself (a composite deck-and-concrete floor can weigh 35 to 45 psf before anything is placed on it); concentrated wheel loads from pallet jacks and carts; point loads where racking or a machine bears on the deck; and the load path down the columns into the existing slab, which frequently is not thick enough and needs a footing. The fourth one is the most common cause of a budget surprise on a retrofit.
Can a mezzanine be upgraded to a higher load rating later?
Sometimes, and it is always more expensive than building it right the first time. Adding beams or reducing the column grid means working around whatever is already installed on and under the platform. Because the cost difference between 100 and 125 psf at design stage is usually small, we generally recommend buying the higher rating if there is any realistic chance the use changes.
