Custom steel catwalks: strut channel or structural steel.
"Catwalk" covers everything from a bolt-together strut-channel walkway over a cable tray to a clear-span structural steel bridge across a production aisle. The two are priced and engineered nothing alike. Here's how to tell which one your application needs — and what a fabricator needs from you to quote it.
Short answer: use Unistrut-type strut channel for short spans, light maintenance loads, and layouts you expect to change. Use welded and bolted structural steel when you need to span more than a few metres, carry real traffic, hang the walkway from the roof, or get it through a permit. Span and load decide it — not the catalogue.
The two ways catwalks get built
Most of the catwalks in a working plant fall into one of two construction families, and buyers get quoted both without always being told which they're looking at:

The failure mode we get called in to fix is a strut-channel system pushed past its span. It'll stand up — but it bounces underfoot, and a catwalk that feels unsafe stops getting used, which defeats the point of building it. Deflection, not strength, is usually what governs a walkway.
How it's supported: three arrangements
Independent of the framing material, a catwalk gets its load to ground one of three ways, and this is the decision that most affects cost:
- Floor-supported on its own columns. The default and the cheapest to engineer. Columns land on the slab, and the slab gets checked for the point load — on an older building that check sometimes turns into a footing.
- Building-supported. The catwalk bears on existing columns or structural walls. Cheap in steel, but it imposes load on framing that was designed for a roof, so the existing structure has to be reviewed.
- Suspended from above. Hung from roof structure or joists to keep the floor completely clear — the right call over a live production line or tank farm, and the one most likely to require reinforcement of the existing framing.
People search "suspended catwalk systems" expecting it to be a product. It isn't — it's a load-path decision about your building. We survey the existing structure before we price a hung walkway, because the reinforcement is frequently a bigger line item than the catwalk.
What to spec: the six numbers
These are what we need to turn a request into a real quote rather than a range. The catwalk design standards post covers the code references behind them:

Deck choice: what falls through, and what sheds
The deck is the spec that gets changed most often after the fact, so it's worth getting right the first time. Bar grate is the industrial default — strong, open, drains, and lets light through to whatever is below. Grip-strut sheds snow, ice, and debris better and gives a more aggressive footing, which is why it wins outdoors and on stair treads. Solid plate or checker plate is used where you can't have anything dropping onto equipment or product underneath — but it collects water, so it needs slope and drainage. One detail that gets missed: if the catwalk passes over a walking area or a workstation, the deck and the toe board have to be selected together. An open grate with a 4" toe board still lets small debris through onto whoever is below.
Catwalk or mezzanine?
The line is use, not size. A catwalk is circulation — you walk along it to reach something. A work platform or mezzanine creates usable area — you stand, work, or store on it. The distinction matters because it drives the design live load, and because a platform large enough to be occupied space can pull in additional code requirements a walkway doesn't. Plenty of real projects are both: a mezzanine with catwalk legs running out to serve equipment. Installing over a live line
Most catwalk work is a retrofit into a running plant, which makes install sequencing as much of the job as fabrication. Shop-assembling in the largest sections that will fit through the door, pre-drilling connections so nothing gets fabricated overhead, and setting steel during a scheduled window are what keep the line moving.
